Permit Types
Parking Permit Types
A permit is an authorization issued by the Parking Department for parking a vehicle on campus for a specified length of time.
To ensure the maximum use of our limited parking facilities, it is necessary to regulate the parking of all faculty/staff, student, and visitor-operated motor vehicles and motorcycles.
Faculty includes all Illinois professors, visiting professors, adjunct professors, and instructors.
Staff includes personnel of the university or of an approved Allied Agency employed at the Urbana-Champaign campus classified as exempt or non-exempt; union-based, clerical, service, or non-academic classification.
New Faculty/Staff
Welcome to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign!
- Prior to your start date, contact the Parking Department by phone at (217) 333-3530 or email at parkingcomments@illinois.edu.
- You will be asked to provide your University Identification Number (UIN). This nine (9) digit number can be found on your i-card
- Parking Department staff will look up your employment status and benefit eligibility in the Human Resources – Parking Application.
- Once the Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) and Benefit Category are reviewed, you will discuss parking options (payroll deduction, rates, second or third shift permit, shuttle permit, etc.). Full-Time employees with benefits are eligible for payroll deduction, which is .96% of their annual base salary.
- If HR has not yet completed entering your FTE and/or Benefit Category into the HR database, you will be asked to provide an offer letter by email at or in person at the Parking Department.
- Once Parking Department staff reviews the offer letter, you will discuss parking options (payroll deduction, rates, second or third shift permit, shuttle permit, etc.).
- Depending on eligibility, you may purchase a permit online or in person.
- Vehicle information (license plate number, make, model, year, and color) must be provided at the time of purchase.
- Permit enforcement is done by License Plate Recognition (LPR).
- Those employees who sign up for payroll deduction will also sign up for auto-renewal. This will insure your permit is automatically renewed every year with no hassle.
- If you prefer to park in another lot that is currently full, you may request your name be added to up to two (2) waitlists.
- You will receive an email at a later date when waitlisted lot(s) are available.
Student
Student permits and student shuttle permits are available to purchase in a 12-month time period for all students not qualified to receive a Faculty/Staff Permit. A permit is an authorization issued by the Parking Department for parking a vehicle on campus for a specified length of time.
- Students include full-time, part-time, daytime, evening, and weekend Illinois students, and students of any other institutions leasing land or facilities on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
- Student permits and student shuttle permits are virtual, linked to the license plates on your account. You will not receive a physical permit to display in your vehicle.
Temporary
Temporary permits are issued for a specified time period and availability, and contain a lot designator and expiration date. Temporary permits can be purchased over in person or call 217-333-3530.
Day Meters
Day Meter Permits may be used at University of Illinois meters and pay by app spaces only (excluding red short term meters). University parking spaces are marked with an orange "Block I". Any remaining campus parking meters are marked by a block I sticker and have been plugged to no longer accept coins. These permits become valid when you scratch off the month, day, and year, and place the permit on the rear-view mirror with the date displayed toward the windshield. Day Meter Permits can be purchased online or in person.
Department Meters
Departmental Meter Permits are issued to departments and paid for with departmental funds allowing a visitor, guest, or departmental employee, on a discretionary basis, to use university meters/pay by app spaces without payment. Departmental Meter Permits may not be purchased for exclusive use by individual faculty or staff.
- These permits may only be ordered by using the Departmental Meter Permit Form.

Accessible Parking
Faculty and staff requiring accessible parking accommodations must initiate a permit request through the Office of Access & Equity (OAE) (Home - Office for Access and Equity (OAE), University of Illinois). OAE will contact the Parking Department once an individual’s accessibility requirements have been evaluated.
For parking accommodations submitted on the basis of pregnancy, faculty and staff must initiate the request through the OAE.
Students requiring accessible parking accommodations must initiate a permit request through the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) (Disability Resources & Educational Services - University of Illinois). DRES will contact the Parking Department once an individual’s accessibility requirements have been evaluated.
If an accessible space is assigned, the Parking Department will produce a virtual or temporary University of Illinois accessible permit, for which any previously assigned faculty/staff permit must be surrendered for the duration of that accessible assignment.
As necessary and where available, eligible faculty, staff, or students may purchase an accessible permit and be assigned a permanent parking space with twenty-four (24) hour signage for enforcement purposes. The permit holder must display the University of Illinois Parking Department issued permit or have a valid virtual permit on file, in addition to a valid state issued disability placard or license plate.
Because a state issued disability parking placard is issued to the person and not the vehicle, the placard is transferrable for authorized usage in other vehicles. While parked in any accessible space, the permit holder must either display a valid state issued disability parking placard from the rearview mirror, or a valid state issued disability license plate.
When parking in a rental facility, a citation may be issued for failure to properly display either a valid state issued disability parking placard or state issued disability license plate along with a valid virtual University of Illinois faculty/staff or student parking permit.
When parking in an accessible space, the individual who was issued a valid state issued disability parking placard or state disability license plate must be in the vehicle at the time the vehicle is being parked.
State issued disability parking placards and state disability license plates are only valid through the expiration date indicated on the placard or plate. In Illinois, the illegal use of a parking space reserved for persons with disabilities carries a minimum $250 fine.
State of Illinois issued meter-exempt parking placards (yellow and gray striped) are issued by the State of Illinois to persons who meet the qualifying criteria. This placard EXEMPTS the authorized holder from payment of parking meter fees and time limitations, except at meters or signs with time limitations of 30 minutes or less. All other State of Illinois and out of state disability parking placards, permanent or temporary, DO NOT exempt authorized holders from payment of parking meter fees or time limitations.
Valid out of state permits issued to persons with a disability may park in designated accessible spaces, which have not been assigned. However, out of state accessibility permits are not exempt from parking fees or time limitations.
Vendor
An employee(s) on contract by Illinois who resides in a campus dwelling may be eligible for a Faculty/Staff Permit. Eligibility is determined by length of contract and must be provided by the hiring agent at the time of purchase. Call 217-333-3530.
Motorcycle
Where can I park my motorcycle?
- Motorcycle parking is only permitted in designated areas displaying a “Motorcycle Parking” sign. There are motorcycle facilities throughout campus. For specific locations see campus parking map and look for a star.
- Motorcycles may park at metered spaces if the meter is paid. For safety reasons, motorcycle parking is not available in parking garages.
Do motorcycles require a permit?
- Motorcycles, when parking in a campus motorcycle parking area, are required to have a current permit.
- Upon request, faculty/staff paying for an annual permit (shuttle, 2nd & 3rd shift permits not eligible) may be issued one motorcycle permit medallion at no additional charge.
Please note the following partial list of stipulations:
- Available upon request only to current Illinois faculty/staff annual permit holders paying for an annual permit
- Only one MC permit will be issued per qualifying annual faculty/staff permit holder with proof of vehicle registration in the permit holder’s name
- MC permits are not automatically renewed
- MC permits are not eligible with Shuttle Permits, Student Permits, or any Temporary Permit types
- MC permits are not available to non-university affiliates
- MC permits are not eligible for refund
- MC permits are non-transferable
- MC permits issued under this program must be surrendered when separating from the university or if the annual parking permit is returned or cancelled
- MC permits are valid ONLY in MC designated parking areas
Construction
The university must approve construction staging area locations and dimensions. Use of any parking facilities for construction-related activity must be approved in advance by the Parking Department. There are fees involved with the use of any parking facility for construction activity including staging or temporary disruptions caused by construction vehicles or equipment.
Contractor parking options will likely include remote facilities and shuttle services.
All vehicles parked outside of staging areas on university property or on university streets must display a valid permit unless parked in a metered space. If parked at a meter, the meter must be paid. Contractors are allowed to park within fenced construction staging areas.
Contractors who fail to make proper arrangements for the use of parking facilities on campus will be subject to current parking enforcement regulations.

Department Relocations
If your department moves from one campus location to another, we can assist with the relocation of faculty/staff parking assisgnments. Requests for parking assignment changes will be honored if space is available and all procedures have been followed.
Guidelines
Reassignment of parking is not always possible. Campus core area parking facilities are typically oversold and the area to which a department relocates may not have the capacity to accept any additional permits.
To qualify for a change of parking assignment each department employee must already have a current University of Illinois parking permit. Shuttle permits do not qualify. Employees who do not meet the qualifying guidelines will not be eligible to move.
Assignment proximity to the new department location will be determined by parking customer seniority. Those who have been a customer the longest will be offered the closest locations.
Individual requests for parking assignment relocations will be honored if space in the requested facility is available. Individuals will not be placed ahead of those who are on the waiting list for any given facility.
Processes/Procedures:
Requests for department relocation parking changes must be filed with the Parking Department at least 30 days prior to the expected move to allow sufficient time to address the request and make arrangements if a move is possible.
Once a request has been made, the Parking Department will require a list of all personnel who desire a closer parking assignment. The list must include name, UIN and current parking assignment of each employee.
Upon receipt, the Parking Department will evaluate the request to determine any available parking options within a reasonable distance of the new department location. There is no guarantee that parking will be in one location.
When a parking move cannot be accomplished, those who wish to move closer to the new department location may add their names to the end of waiting lists for closer parking facilities.
